OVERVIEW
VOICE Magazine is the oldest Black/Latino student-run publication on the Rutgers University, New Brunswick campus. Their mission is to highlight topics significant to and affecting minority communities on and around the greater New Brunswick area.
Scarlet and Black, the Fall 2017 issue, was dedicated toward progression of black and brown voices being recognized and acknowledged. The issue takes its name after Marisa J. Fuentes’ and Deborah Gray White’s book discussing disenfranchised populations that contributed to Rutgers University’s success.
To emphasize the issue’s message, red and black were used as the core colors of the design. Color was used to spotlight the headlines of each article to visually give voice to the authors. Graphic lines were used throughout the issue to represent the continuous progression that the issue wished to impart.
The Identity Issue, the Spring 2018 issue, was dedicated to the experience of what it means to be Black and the search, journey, movement, and revolution of identifying as Black. It explores being Black through the perspective of the individual and society and concludes with the importance of strength within community.
The color scheme of this issue was purposefully pared back to focus more on the stories being told. The issue focused heavily on photography to help visually convey identity across a spectrum, alluding to the spectrum of unique individuals within the Black identity. Similar graphic lines from the previous issue were used to suggest constant persistence of the Black voice.
